Casa de La Flora – a New Thai Resort from VaSLab Architecture
The Casa de La Flora from VaSLab Architecture just opened in March, and has already been selected as a finalist for “Best Luxury Resort Spa 2011”.
The resort, set in gorgeous Khao Lak, Thailand, is comprised of a series of individual villas, stacked up a hill from the beach, and sited so that each one gets its own pool and view of the ocean.
The villas are simple concrete cubes, lavishly lined with a thick layer of richly oiled wood. Indeed, the architects maintain that the art form of Cubism has been a big influence on their work.
Stunningly sited on the beach of the Andaman Sea, Casa deLa Flora is quietly nestled in an oasis of natural serenity. Behind the villas are tropical rain forests protected by the Thai government: Khao Lak National Park and Khao Sok National Park.
Each very urban villa comes complete with its own private pool, a small garden, seaside view – and a 24-hour butler service!
The sleekly understated design creates a relaxing environment of a few pure and natural materials: glass, wood, stone and steel.
To give the tropical retreat its contemporary and cutting edge perspective, the Thai-based architectural firm’s co-founders Vasu Virajsilp and Boonlert Deeyuen worked closely with Casa de La Flora owner Sompong Dowpiset.
To supply clean energy, solar power is integrated seamlessly into the design. The butterfly-shaped roofs are designed to collect rainwater.
As a spa based resort, the bathrooms show particular attention to detail. The glow of the rich wood interior is particularly sensuous under the sophisticated lighting at night.
As the owner puts it, they successfully “blend of privacy, peace, beauty, nature, and comfort together with style, sewing it on a trendy silver plate”.
The result of their collaboration is effortless luxury, that transcends typical resort architecture.

It's no mystery, from these photos, why this place is a finalist for best luxury resort/spa in 2011… The architecture and decor are simply gorgoeus, to say nothing of the location.
