From Boring Yard to Luxurious Escape in a Beach Neighborhood
This glamourous backyard escape transformed a coastal Perth backyard that was barely used despite a temperate climate conducive to outdoor living.
Originally, the large but boring and ill-defined backyard area was overlooked by neighbours on three sides.
The site is Perth’s northern beach suburbs, with the salt, wind and sun that can be harsh on houses that are often found near beaches.
The first priority in creating the new outdoor room was to provide shelter from the morning sun and privacy from elevated neighbours at the rear.
So a tall perimeter wall better defined the space, making a more private and intimate setting.
A louvred roof offered the flexibility to control light entering the main dining area as well as winter sun into the new theatre room.
A large Victorian ash timber structure was used throughout the space, to balance the bulk of the two storey home.
A firebowl feature was included to bring warmth and welcoming charm to the space.
Essentially, an entirely new house in the backyard was built: an extra dining, living and bar area outside in the gorgeous Perth climate.
The only feature from the original yard was the pool.
Now the same pool is transformed by being defined into the gorgeous new outdoor spaces.
