The Dame of Melba House on the Australian Coastline
Seeley Architects designed this beach house overlooking the rugged coastline of Australia’s Anglesea.
A gigantic viewing frame extends out in front of a deck that juts from its second floor.
This captures the sea view from the deck outside.
The Dame of Melba is a residence for a retired couple designed to also house family members on vacation.
A comfortable second floor houses the kitchen, living room and dining, and behind the viewer, the retired couple’s bedroom and bathroom that also overlooks the sea.
An angled deck on the back of the house offers an entry into the living room and a view of the framed deck.
This back deck offers a sheltered outdoor space shielded from the coastal wind with exterior wooded shutters.
In the harsh, salty environment, the wood exterior that weathers well over time will slowly change to the grey color of coastal bleached driftwood.
The back deck is on an angle in the plan, creating a carport underneath.
Entry to the main floor is up a staircase behind the kitchen and up into the open plan kitchen and living area.
All the essentials for the retired couple’s year-round living is thus all on this one floor with easy access throughout, giving this holiday home the potential of becoming a lasting full time home for retirement.
