The Sweet Charm of a Finnish Treehouse
House Kekkapaa in North Espoo, Finland includes a family home with the feeling of a treehouse – and a garden sauna – as well as a workshop.
POOK Arkkitehtitoimisto Oy designed the house with a glassed in outdoor dining patio at its heart.
The main building comprises two zones – living and working – and this glass-roofed conservatory linking the two.
Indoors, in typical Scandinavian style, a playroom/gym is squeaky clean, white from top to bottom, offset by bold color.
During the day the living area is used for in-home child-care.
The shallow gable of the roof echoes the traditional homes in the area.
The building has been partially excavated into the slope for close contact with nature.
Upstairs the deck offers a peaceful sunset view through the sparse pines across the Finnish waterscape.
Freestanding glulam columns, plywood and tension bars at the end give the frame the required stiffness.
Sited between the living and working areas of the house, the conservatory acts as a shared dining space and as the meeting room of the office.
The office space can later be transformed into a separate apartment.
At the end of the garden, along a solitary path, a freestanding sauna offers an escape on chilly winter nights.
His and hers showers mean no-one has to wait to relax in the welcoming sauna after racing in on a snowy night.
At the end of the day, a charming and peaceful space can be found in the quiet of this sweet and simple Scandinavian bedroom.
