Design Dilemma: Five Couches That Make Sitting Greener
When it comes time to plunk down several hundred (or thousand!) dollars for a couch, more and more of us these days, think green first. Sure, we want our couch to look fabulous. We want it to be durable. We want it to be comfortable and fit through the front door. But we also want to know our new sofa was not made using toxic chemicals, synthetic fabrics, or with non-sustainable manufacturing processes. Here we offer five couches that fit the bill:
1. The Safia Sofa, $3995 by Environment Furniture. (Pictured above.)
Upholstered in vintage canvas that once graced “shelter half” Army tents, each Safia sofa exudes a cozy, lived-in character due to marks of wear inherent in the fabric. The organic upholstery is manufactured in the U.S.A.
2. Kristina Sectional Sofa, by Ekla Home.
Made of 100% organic wool, the Kristina sofa is dyed with fiber-reactive low-impact, non-toxic dye. It is constructed of natural rubber, 100% organic US grown and milled wool, 100% organic cotton barrier cloth, FSC alder frame and legs, recycled steel springs, safecoat and no VOC stain.
3. The Todhunter Sofa, by Q Collection. This elegant sofa of 100 % certified wood was made using no brominated flame retardant, no added formaldehyde, no polyurethane, natural latex foam rubber, 100% wool batting, natural jute webbing and burlap, water-based, non-toxic glue and pesticide-free fabric.
4. The Dolci Chaise by Ecobalanza. Boasting French stitching and sculpted stainless legs, this stylish lounger has modern appeal made all the more alluring by its eco-friendly origins. It’s made with FSC-certified wood (kiln dried), natural latex foam cushions, recycled polyester fabrics, organic hemp and cotton fabrics, organic wool fabrics, 8-way hand tied coil springs and eco-friendly adhesives.
5. The Idel Sectional by Cisco Home. Made of 100% FSC wood, the Idel sectional offers 8-way tied hand-tied springs on a hardwood frame. It was handmade of organic cloth.
