How To: Repairing Drywall
If you own your own home, there may be a time when you need to repair your drywall. Anytime you get a hole or problem in a specific area in your wall you will want to do a drywall patch to get your walls back into shape. Repairing your drywall really isn’t as hard as it seems. Matter of fact, it is easy enough for you to do yourself.
Items Needed:
- Utility knife
- Small piece of drywall
- 1 small piece of poster board
- Scissors
- Joint compound
- Putty Knife
- Hand sander
Now that you have all your needed items, let’s get to work fixing that drywall. Here’s what you’ll need to do:
- Cut out damaged area into a square
- Remove any loose areas with a utility knife
- Create a square template, using poster board, the size of the square
- Using template, draw the square onto your drywall.
- Score the back of the drywall following the lines you drew and break it on the line you scored, leaving the paper attached.
- Trim paper down leaving about 1 in (depending on how much you need to cover the area outside hole (face paper)Â that may be ripped and jagged from the missing paper)
- Place your repair piece up to the hole to make sure it measures and fits correctly. You may need to use your utility knife to remove some of the sides of the hole to ensure a proper fit.
- Once you are sure you have the correct size, apply a significant amount of compound around all sides of the hole where the face paper will be used to cover any damaged areas. Apply compound just as you would frosting to a cake.
- Place repair piece in it’s place, smooth all sides down with putty knife, make sure it is flush against the wall. Scrape away any excess compound you still have around patch and coming out of face paper when you flatten it.
- Allow area to dry overnight. Once completely dry, apply a thin layer of joint compound to area. Smooth out as much as possible.
- Let dry. Sand and apply desired paint to match rest of wall.
